It's no surprise that African Americans as a whole are the majority when it comes to the many diseases such as diabetes, lung cancer and having high blood pressure. This is something that many of us take lightly, however we don't realize how much this affects our people. African American women are almost twice as likely to suffer from obesity than African American men. Many of us look to social media for approval and try to achieve being "thick" the wrong way. Instead of lifting weights in the gym to gain muscle, a lot of us think that simply eating things like bread will help us to gain the weight in places like our butt and thighs. Unfortunately, this is a myth and it will only lead to obesity if you indulge in food hoping to get thick instead of going to the gym for an hour 5 days of the week. Us as black women need to realize how important our health is before its too late. Its especially important that we start becoming more active as a whole. If you aren't used to going out jogging, you can always by walking for at least 30 minutes a day. Seriously, don't feel ashamed, we've all started somewhere and it wasn't easy for us either. If you are the type of person who prefers someone to walk/jog with you, call up a reliable friend or look up your local walking, jogging or cycling groups! If you need competition to keep you going, download the Strava app, this allows you to compete with friends while getting in shape and having fun. Take control of your health before it takes control of you!
